As predicted the heat was the biggest factor this weekend. As they say, no plan survives contact with the enemy. I would modify that with the idea that a plan backed up with training is essential, but also the plan needs to adapt in the moment on race day.

In this case I needed to adapt my race plan to the heat. In one race last summer I completely blew up towards the end, getting cramp due to dehydration and fatigue, meaning I hobbled the last 5k of the run and lost 20 minutes – it lost me a place on the podium.
That was a painful learning experience (is there any other type?).
This time I managed to adjust my speed expectations on the mountain run. I had also stashed spare liquids and nutrition, which were much needed on the return bike leg.
This race being the first time I have done this format with 2 bike legs split by the run.
I also had to adjust my speed expectations on the 2nd bike leg. I was definitely suffering from the heat, but somehow I kept overtaking people who looked in an even worse state than me.
It wasn't until a day later that I realised the 2nd bike leg was my best performance of the day (compared to other athletes)- even though it didn't feel that way at the time.
A long distance endurance race like this is not just about going fast, it's about who adapts best to the conditions.
So, on reflection I am pretty pleased with my execution and adaptation of the plan, which resulted in a top 10 finish in my age group.
You can't plan for everything, but you can make sure you have the skills and experience to adapt and succeed on the day.
